Short answer: Gudauri works well for a family ski trip, especially if your kids are 4 years or older and take lessons for the first days. Plan short, well-timed sessions, choose accommodation close to the lifts, and keep a few spare days for weather.
We teach skiing and snowboarding to kids in Gudauri every season. These are the things we wish every parent knew before arriving.
What age can kids start skiing?
We teach children from 4 years old, both skiing and snowboarding.
- Age 4–6: skiing is usually the easier start. Short attention span is normal, so the lesson is built around games and lots of small successes.
- Age 7+: most kids can start with either skiing or snowboarding.
- Snowboarding: kids with good balance often enjoy it from around 7–8, but every child is different.
If your child has never been on snow, the first goal is not technique. It is feeling safe, comfortable and wanting to come back tomorrow.
Private or group lesson?
| Private lesson | Small group (2–4 kids) | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | First-timers, shy kids, specific goals | Siblings, friends, kids at the same level |
| Pace | Fully adapted to one child | Set for the group |
| Price (2 h, per child) | 280 GEL | from 150 GEL per child (group of 4) |
| Motivation | Instructor’s full attention | Kids push each other |
Our advice: for complete beginners, start with one or two private lessons to build confidence, then switch to a small group with kids of a similar level. Siblings of a similar age and level can share a group lesson. See private kids‘ ski lessons, kids‘ group ski lessons and all prices.
How long should a kids‘ lesson be?
Our lessons start at 2 hours, and for most children that is the right length. It is long enough to make real progress, with a short break included, and short enough that they finish wanting more.
For multi-day trips, a 2-hour lesson every day works better than one long day. Kids progress by repetition and sleep.
Planning the day
- Book the morning. Kids have most energy before lunch, and snow is usually in better condition.
- Eat before the lesson. A hungry child is a cold and unhappy child.
- Arrive early. Give yourself time for boots, toilet and getting to the meeting point. After booking we send you the exact meeting point as a map pin.
- Afternoon free time. After a lesson, a short family session on easy terrain, sledding or simply resting is often better than more skiing.
What to pack for kids
- Helmet – strongly recommended, and many rentals offer kids‘ helmets.
- Goggles that fit the helmet, plus sunglasses for breaks. UV at altitude is strong.
- Waterproof mittens – warmer than gloves for young kids. Bring a spare pair.
- Thermal base layer and fleece, not cotton.
- Neck warmer instead of a scarf.
- High-SPF sunscreen and lip balm.
- Small snacks in a pocket.
If you do not bring your own equipment, rent before the lesson starts and check that boots fit snugly without pinching. Our first-day checklist covers rentals and ski passes in more detail.
Where to stay with kids
Stay as close to the lifts as your budget allows. Walking 15 minutes in ski boots with a tired 5-year-old is the fastest way to ruin a day. New Gudauri is the most practical area for families, because most apartments are within walking distance of the gondola. Read how the resort works for an overview of the areas.
When to go with kids
March is often the most comfortable month for families: longer, sunnier and warmer days. Mid–late January and February weekdays are also good, with fewer crowds than the holiday weeks. See our month-by-month guide.
Safety on the slopes
- Teach kids to stop at the side of the piste, never in the middle or below a ridge.
- Agree on a meeting point in case you get separated, and put your phone number in their pocket.
- Never let young kids ride lifts alone.
- In bad weather, it is fine to cut the day short. Gudauri’s weather can change fast.
FAQ
Is Gudauri good for families?
Yes, especially for families whose kids are taking lessons. The wide, open slopes are good for learning. If you want lots of non-ski activities, also consider Bakuriani.
From what age do you teach kids?
From 4 years old, skiing and snowboarding.
Do kids need a helmet in Gudauri?
We strongly recommend it for all children.
Can parents watch the lesson?
Yes, from a distance. Many kids focus better when parents are out of sight, so a short check-in at the end often works best.
Do you teach in other languages than English?
Yes, we also teach in Russian and Czech.
