Short answer: choose Gudauri if you want higher altitude, a longer season, big open pistes, freeride and an easy transfer from Tbilisi. Choose Bakuriani if you want a forested village atmosphere, more non-ski activities for families, and you are flying into Kutaisi anyway.

Gudauri: altitude, space and freeride
Gudauri is the larger, higher and more modern of the two. Most of the ski area is above the treeline, which means wide, open pistes with long cruising runs and big views.
Why people choose Gudauri:
- Altitude and season length. Higher lifts usually mean better snow late in the season and a closing date in April.
- Wide red runs. The terrain is ideal for intermediates who want to work on carving and speed control.
- Freeride and touring. Gudauri is known for its off-piste terrain. With a certified local guide and proper equipment, you can ride bowls and long descents away from the pistes. Read our freeride and ski touring safety guide.
- Easy access from Tbilisi. The drive is straightforward when the road is open.
What to keep in mind:
- Wind and visibility. With no trees, bad weather is felt more. On windy days the upper lifts can stop.
- Less village charm. New Gudauri is mostly modern apartment blocks and hotels, built for skiing rather than for strolling.
Bakuriani: forest, village life and families
Bakuriani is one of Georgia’s oldest winter resorts, set among pine forests near Borjomi. The skiing is spread over several areas, including Didveli, Kokhta and Mitarbi.
Why people choose Bakuriani:
- Atmosphere. A real village with forest around it, which many people find cosier than Gudauri.
- Shelter in bad weather. Tree-lined slopes give better visibility on snowy days.
- Things to do off the slopes. Sledding, snowmobiles and other activities make it popular with families with young children.
- Lower day pass price in recent seasons.
What to keep in mind:
- Lower altitude, so the season usually ends earlier, often in late March.
- Longer transfer from Tbilisi.
Which resort for which skier?
- Complete beginners: both work. Gudauri has long, wide blue runs for progressing beyond the first days. Bakuriani has a cosier setting.
- Families with small kids: Bakuriani offers more non-ski activities. Gudauri works well if the kids are in lessons and you want more varied skiing for the adults.
- Intermediates: Gudauri, thanks to the long, wide red runs.
- Advanced skiers and freeriders: Gudauri.
- Late-season trips (late March – April): Gudauri, because of its altitude.
Can you combine both?
Yes, but it is a big transfer. Gudauri is north of Tbilisi, Bakuriani is to the west. If you have a week or more, some travellers split their time, for example arriving in Tbilisi for Gudauri and leaving via Kutaisi after Bakuriani. For a shorter trip, staying in one resort means more time on the snow.
