Best Time to Ski in Gudauri: Month-by-Month Guide (2026/27 Season)

Best Time to Ski in Gudauri: Month-by-Month Guide (2026/27 Season)

Short answer: for the most reliable snow and fewer crowds, aim for mid-January to early March, avoiding Georgian holiday weeks. Beginners and families who want milder days should look at March. The season typically runs from late December to mid/late April, depending on snow.

Below is what each part of the season is really like, so you can pick dates that match your level and plans.

Gudauri ski season dates

Gudauri is Georgia’s highest major ski resort, with lifts running from roughly 2,000 m up to around 3,270 m. That altitude gives it one of the longer seasons in the Caucasus.

  • Last season (2025/26): the main cable cars started on 27 December 2025 and pistes opened in stages as snow cover allowed.
  • Typical closing: mid to late April (last season around 19 April).
  • 2026/27: official opening dates are usually confirmed only a few weeks before the start, and they depend on snowfall. Treat any date you see now as a forecast, not a promise.

Tip: if you are booking flights early, plan for January onwards. Late December trips can be great, but you are betting on early snow.

Month by month

Late December – early season

The lifts open, but not every piste is ready. Snowmaking covers the main runs, and the rest opens as natural snow builds up.

  • Good for: beginners and intermediates who mainly need groomed runs near the base.
  • Watch out for: limited terrain, and the Christmas – New Year holiday crowds. Prices for accommodation are at their highest.

January – peak winter

Cold, usually good snow, and the full lift network running on most days.

  • Busy weeks: New Year and the Orthodox Christmas period (around 7 January) bring many visitors from Georgia and neighbouring countries. Expect queues and fully booked instructors.
  • Quieter weeks: mid to late January is often one of the best windows of the whole season.
  • Good for: everyone. Cold snow holds well on the pistes, and off-piste conditions start to develop.

February – the most reliable month

Deepest snowpack and a full resort. February weekends are busy, weekdays are noticeably calmer.

  • Good for: intermediates, advanced skiers, and anyone who wants freeride with a guide.
  • Watch out for: strong wind days. When wind or visibility is bad, the upper lifts can stop while lower lifts keep running.

March – sun, longer days, spring snow

Longer, brighter days and softer snow, especially in the afternoon. Many skiers rate March as the most enjoyable month.

  • Good for: families, beginners, and anyone who prefers comfortable temperatures.
  • How to ski it: start early, when snow is firm, and move to north-facing and higher slopes as the day warms up.

April – late season

Snow quality depends on the year. Higher slopes can stay good well into April, while lower runs get slushy and close first.

  • Good for: relaxed spring skiing, lower prices and empty slopes.
  • Watch out for: a shorter day on the snow and the season possibly ending earlier than planned.

Weather and wind: what to expect

Gudauri sits high in the Greater Caucasus, and the weather can change fast. Two things are worth knowing before you go:

  • Wind can close upper lifts. It is normal to have a day when the top of the resort is closed and you ski the lower and middle sections. Plan a few buffer days if you have specific goals.
  • The road can close in heavy snow. The Georgian Military Highway through Gudauri is sometimes closed temporarily during storms. Leave some slack around your arrival and departure days. Read more in our guide on how to get to Gudauri from Tbilisi or Kutaisi.

When to book lessons

Instructors fill up fastest around Christmas, New Year, Orthodox Christmas and February weekends. If your dates fall into those weeks, book as early as possible. For other periods, a few weeks ahead is usually enough.

Our lessons start at 2 hours, with 4 h, 6 h, full-day and multi-day options. After booking we send you the exact meeting point as a map pin. See all lesson types and prices.
